Pickleball: A growing number of new stadiums

Pickleball, a sport that has swept the world over the years, was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, which is just a short ferry ride from Seattle, Wash. The love of the sport has spread throughout city parks, country clubs, and communities. Since the town of the United States Amateur Pickleball Association (USAPA) in 1984, the sport has grown and progressed worldwide. The Sports and Fitness Industry Association’s 2019 report shows that Pickleball continues to be one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, with 3.3 million participants. Pickleball Lighting Requirements and Standards

With the emergence and growth of any new sport, requirements and standards must be established for court construction. The American Pickleball Association sets the officially recognized rules of play and court dimensions. Pickleball courts are rectangular and look much like tennis or badminton courts. The standard dimensions for singles and doubles courts are 20 ft. x 44 ft. with a minimum total playing area of 30 ft. x 60 ft. (34 ft. x 64 ft. is recommended). A typical outdoor pickleball court requires four poles and four LED light fixtures.
Pickleball court standards require lighting to be provided by fixtures mounted on 20-foot poles, providing an average of 30-footcandles (FC) with a maximum/minimum ratio of 2.0 or less. Mounting the fixture on a 20-foot pole allows pickleball players to see the ball as it enters the high arc. Shorter poles will cause the ball to disappear as it passes the light and reappears elsewhere as it returns to the court. 30 FC is the level of light required for a player to see the ball, even if the ball is moving at high speed. Lower levels of lighting can make visibility difficult.
The max/min ratio is the maximum area of lighting on the court divided by the minimum area of lighting on the court. It is a measure of how uniform the light is. While other sports typically set the max/min ratio at 3.0, most other sports are played on larger fields or courts. Pickleball has a max/min ratio of 2.0. 2.0 max/min ratio is very evenly lit for improved visibility. Dark areas do not obscure the ball, and the player’s eyes do not need to adjust to different light levels.
